Quadrophonic Music.
Where's it at these days?

I dabbled with (listening to) it in the early 80s but didn't really have the right environment.

When I did move to a house in which I could have effectively deployed it, my (now) -ex put the kerbosh on all things that I enjoyed before we got married.

Would be interested to find out how it fared/if it's still used anywhere.

My uncle's friend used to have it on his Clipper, amazing sound, if you were in the right spot.

Never mind quadrophonic, most people I know don't even have stereo systems at home these days, Usually some pony single speaker unit for ipods, with a grand total of 10 W output.

I've recently bought a Denon stereophonic hi-fi system that does absolutely everything. Music streaming, internet radio, CD player, FM radio, turntable and cassette connections, tv digi-box input, usb and analogue (so I can connect my old sony hi-md player) front panel inputs. 60 watts a channel. With Wharfedale speakers £300 the lot. I heartily recommend it.

By the way Mike, it's not kerbosh, but kybosh. And sorry to hear that you once married a beautiful but money grabbing tart.

Fair play.

Mind you I used to screw that up by taking two amps to gigs and putting one on my side of the stage, and one on the other side, mostly so I could annoy the bass player by turning it up behind him when he wasn't expecting it. :)

I could have, but the only people interested in that game are BBC loving, plummy-mouthed, toffee-nosed, public school poofs called Julian, so I'm not legally qualified to do it in public.

Cock helmet,

You could have done a 'rugger' prediction type thingy.

You lazy prick.

The update's there. Do you need me to post up "Logging on to Simple Web Sites for Tiny Tots" to point you in the right direction?

I think that might have been her plan...

Re: Quadrophonic Music.
Right Bungo I am not talking about the mix through the PA or arena shows etc. I meant going to see a band (rock, jazz, etc.) in a club or an orchestra, etc. and hearing their amps/instruments where they are positioned.

Kraftwerk use it for their live shows (along with 3-D projections).

I don't think Quadrophenia was the best music from The Who.

Thank me later.

Knobrot, do you have a prediction table to update? Chop chop.

Have you ever done a spherical song?

A lot of live music is mostly mixed in mono (or with a very narrow stereo mix), as so few punters are actually within the very narrow zone where you can hear an equivalent amount of sound from the stacks either side of the stage and therefore appreciate any stereo mix.

Not sure about Quadrophonic but I must say how good some of the early Beatles Mono music sounded, of course engineered by George Martin

Re: Quadrophonic Music.
Agreed that stereo is preferable for music as when we go to live performance, we are typically facing the band/orchestra/whatever. I'd like the stereo sound stage to be similar to a live setting.

I don't want the ride cymbal coming from the rear right and the second guitar part floating front and rear on the left.

Re: Quadrophonic Music.
I can remember as far back as the 60's talk of quadraphonic sound being the future

Pink Floyd produced special effects with their Azimuth Coordinator, live at The Albert Hall in the 70's, where the sound of increasingly paced footsteps revolved around the whole hall (amongst other things)

The effect was fun & interesting.

A similar idea was originally invented (elsewhere) by having moveable speakers suspended on wires

However, as has been said, we only have 2 ears & tend to turn our heads to face an interesting sound

Hence, unless you are trying to reproduce special effects, there seems to me, to be little point in producing much else other than a good stereo system, possibly with an extra booster for base sounds (which are less directional)

Scientists discovered that human beings had only two ears and that for music quadrophonic was therefore a waste of time.

I think 5.1 effectively replaced it.

She was stunningly attractive and it "seemed like the right thing to do" at the time.

Apart from the fact I ended up with 3 kids, it's not the best era of my life, but I take full responsibility for ignoring all the signs. I fucked up: I moved on. Took the kids with me.

She, though, has had 6 more husbands since our divorce and the indications from each one is that she married them for what they had, not who they were (source: my kids and two of the later husbands).

5:1 mixed music is all over any HD broadcast stuff on telly. It's used in television and cinema AV studios rather than purely music studios.
